How much sodium do you need in an electrolyte drink?

There is no single correct number. Sodium per serving is a product design choice, and the useful question is which declared figure suits the session you are drinking it for.

Why the sodium range is so wide

Across the products in our database, declared sodium per serving spans from small everyday amounts to well over a gram. That spread is not a quality difference; it reflects who the mix was formulated for. Everyday drinking mixes sit low, sport mixes sit in the middle, and heat and long-effort mixes sit high.

Because the figure is a formulation decision rather than a standard, the only way to compare products honestly is per serving, using the number the brand declares on its own label. We do not estimate sodium for products that do not declare it — those show as not declared rather than as zero.

What changes your own requirement

Sweat losses vary with how long and how hard you work, the temperature and humidity, your clothing, your acclimatisation and how salty your own sweat is. Two people in the same session can lose noticeably different amounts.

This is general information about product labelling, not medical or dietary advice. If you have a health condition, take medication, or want a personal sodium target, ask a qualified health professional rather than a comparison site.

Short indoor sessions

For a short, air-conditioned session most people are choosing on taste and sugar content rather than on sodium, so a lower or moderate declared figure is the usual starting point.

Long, hot or salty-sweat sessions

For multi-hour efforts or hot weather, sodium becomes the variable people search on, which is why the higher-sodium products exist as a distinct group.

How to check a product's declared sodium

Every product page shows the declared sodium per serving alongside the serving size it applies to, plus potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride where the label declares them. Tablets are declared per tablet, which is typically a smaller number than a powder serving — compare per serving, never per tube or per tub.

The database view lets you sort and filter on the declared figure directly, and the category pages pre-apply the common thresholds.
