What the labels actually show
Read past the marketing category and three declared figures separate them: sodium per serving, sugar or carbohydrate per serving, and calories per serving. Sports drinks are built around the carbohydrate figure. Electrolyte mixes are built around the sodium figure, and many of them declare 0g sugar.
Some products sit in between deliberately, which is why we do not split the database into two rival categories — we show the declared numbers and let you filter.

Which one suits the session
For a long or hard effort, carbohydrate is doing a job alongside sodium, and our running and endurance rankings treat declared carbohydrate as useful rather than penalising it. For everyday drinking or an air-conditioned gym session, most people are looking for sodium without the sugar, and those pages prefer lower declared sugar.
So the question is not which category is better. It is which declared panel matches what you are about to do.
Comparing them fairly
A ready-to-drink bottle and a single powder stick rarely share a serving size, so compare per serving as declared, not per bottle against per tub. The comparison tool lines up both on the same fields and keeps undeclared values visible.
